Five new analysts join a desk. Assume each person's birth month is independent and uniformly distributed over the 12 months. What is the probability that at least two of them were born in the same month? Hint (scroll past if you want to struggle a bit longer)
"At least two share" is messy to count directly. What is the complementary event, and how many ways can it happen? Solution at the bottom of this email.

Five Traders, Twelve Months
Compute the complement: all five months are different. The number of ordered ways to give five people distinct months is 12 · 11 · 10 · 9 · 8 = 95,040, out of 12^5 = 248,832 equally likely assignments.
P(all distinct) = 95,040 / 248,832 = 55/144
P(at least one shared month) = 1 − 55/144 = 89/144 ≈ 0.618
The key point is that collisions become likely well before the number of people gets close to the number of categories. The number of pairs (C(5,2) = 10) is what matters, not the number of people. Follow-up: What is the smallest group size that makes a shared month more likely than not? (Answer: 5. With 4 people the probability is 41/96 ≈ 0.427.)

Answer: 118 — a(n) = 3*n^2 - 5*n + 6
Differences grow linearly: take first differences, then second differences are constant, so extend the difference table.
